Live Your Dream. Sail around the world.

we had a BABY during COVID…

It’s pretty incredible creating a little human. One can’t explain it until you go thru it. Having a child changes you…for the better. The past few years have been quite the ride and it’s just going to get wilder as we embark on a 20 (?) year voyage of raising a little human as we continue to sail around the world.

Hi Ben, Ashley, (and Baby Willa!),

First let me begin by saying congratulations on the new crew-mate, Willa is beautiful!

My mum found your channel a few years back now, and we have been watching ever since! We love the videos a lot.

We are also fellow Vancouver Islanders, and are looking so forward to seeing more BC content from this summer, and of course the eventual return to Nahoa. You have inspired me to consider my own future adventure and push outside of that comfort zone.

I am just wondering if you guys are considering bringing back the Sailing Nahoa hats? I am a rowing coach and over summer (well all year really) I live in hats while out on the water in my coach boat, and I would love to be able to rep your beautiful merch and share the Nahoa love.

Thank you guys for sharing your lives, it has been an absolute pleasure to watch. Keep being awesome.

Makala, Thanks for the comment. Super cool you’re from the island as well. Just gearing up to head up to Desolation Sound in the coming month. Stay tuned for that content!

We will be working on hats shortly. Been meaning to do it for a long time but right now we can’t even get a sample from our printer due to Covid. They’re months delayed on normal orders. Hope to have hats by fall which will be too late for you unfortunately but maybe for next year. Sorry!

Thanks for watching and commenting. Getting real nice out now.

Hi Ben and Ashley we are from Saanichton and are heading up to desolation next month for our annual trip. Will you be in the loaner sailboat?

Yep! Our plan is to be in Desolation for the start of July and then again end of August. Just look for the smallest sailboat in the anchorage and that should be us!

Thank you for the response!! Enjoy Desolation Sound – I am planning to head up there myself during a trip to a friends cabin on Savary Island later this summer!

No worries on the hat, I will be ready whenever they are back out.

Hoping this sunshine sticks around! Have a great summer.

Real quick question and suggestion. Maybe this might be something you don’t want to share but it would be really cool to see how you come up with music selection and video clips to weave your videos together. I tried to make a 5 minute video and labored over it for days and in the end it was barely OK but no where close to the caliber of videos you have been creating. The framing and cinematography is amazing. I am sure it helps as they say location, location, location. Anywho, love the videos and have been watching with my kids. The kids are loving them also. It is great to have good content out there for younger viewers and I would recommend your site to anyone.
Watching you with your new baby reminded my wife about the births of our kids. It was cute for my kids to see little ones as they have not be around babies or were to young to remember.
Thank you!

Also, I am sort of new to the whole Patron thing but when you join is that per video you make or per video I watch on that site? I wasn’t real clear on that.
Having Patrons on board for a week is a genius idea.

Patrick. Thanks for the comment and question. The videos are a labour of love. It used to take me (Ben) 2-3 hours or more per final minute of video to produce them. Now I’m down to about 1 hour per minute of video. And that doesn’t include sourcing music etc. But it does get easier and bunch faster.

For Patreon, we try to provide extra content that is less edited. Stuff like real-time updates (since videos are often a few months behind) and LIVE broadcasts where patrons can participate and ask questions Live. The cost is per polished episode that goes up weekly on YouTube. The extra stuff on Patreon is all bonus (free).

Hope that answers your questions and thanks for the compliments! Really appreciated.

Holy Smokes!!! then I don’t feel so bad. I was embarrassed to say that I spent about 20 hours on 5 minute video that still needs polished so as a first timer not a bad effort. Do you find one software that works best or have a few that you use? My oldest son is into YouTube, well, he wants to watch a lot of it but we limit him. He has been playing around with filming and a little editing. With e-learning this past year their assignment was to be turned in via video. It is what you would expect for a young teen and a one take only video but we all start somewhere. I would like to provide for him some tools to help him out. He is good in Math and Science so maybe marine biologist sailing the south pacific. Make sure you don’t film everything out there so he can still have something to do 🙂

Appreciate the reply and good hearing from you.

That’s super cool about your kids. We use a program called Final Cut Pro. The other popular program is called Adobe Premier Pro. Both are good but I’d say the most important thing is to just start shooting video and then learning how to tell a story.

I should have said: We never charge for more than 4 videos per month on patreon. Just updated our patreon tiers to say that. Thanks for the question! I’m sure others had that as well.

Ashley & Ben, thank you for sharing your most important moment with yr followers. So happy that little ‘Willa’ & Mom are well & healthy. As a man experiencing the same trip 50 years ago, I know how hard it is on the Dad, but we can’t convince anyone on that! It is a most joyous thing & also yr biggest responsibility. You & Ashley have an opportunity to give Willa an extraordinary early upbringing; I am sure all 3 of you will enjoy & benefit from the adventure. Helen & I will continue to follow you on yr YouTube episodes, thank you.
I am from Port Alberni, now living in North Vancouver & off course I recognized all yr videos of Duffy Lake road, the Caribou & those of Victoria & Vancouver Island.
When do you plan on resuming the voyage ?
all the best, Capt. Roy Friis, [email protected] 604 785 6540

Oh there will be more footage of Caribou,Vancouver island and Desolation sound coming up shortly. We have a plan in place for this Summer here at home in Canada. With Nahoa in Thailand we are waiting for them to re-open the borders to international travel. Hoping for October but we will see. Thanks for your comment!
