Is anyone here? ….Is this thing on? Been a while hasn’t it?
We visited our friend Christine in Yellowknife. The North West Territories are daunting, at least to me. Simply sounds cold. It is after all just 400 km south of the arctic circle. You wouldn’t know it in the summertime. Balmy 20+ degree weather all day long. Yellowknife is one of those places where it is light out almost all day and night. On the longest day of the year, the Summer solstice, we experience about 3 hours of twilight. A very odd feeling that tricks you into staying up much much later than normal.
Living off the grid was new to us. We’ve lived on boats temporarily but permanently living off the grid is a whole nother reality. A task that is taken much more lightly than realized. No doing laundry. No endless showers, nor any shower at all. It was challenging yet really really rewarding. You work twice as hard, but that non coffee machine coffee tastes twice as good.
The mode of transportation to and from the houseboat is via Canoe (in the summer). Including mattress deliveries.
Midnight swims as the sun is going down…
This trip wouldn’t have been complete without an epic (to us) canoe trip. We had no idea what we were getting into. I’d spent maybe 20 minutes in a canoe prior.
Dinner! These pike were everywhere. If you didn’t catch one within two casts, you were doing something wrong.
Selfies after 2 days of camping. Not bad. Not bad.
Overall an amazing experience. This annual house boat crawl was a fantastic ending. An all night affair ending with local music including a fiddle, guitar, mandolin and fantastic singing. It just kept going and going. I think we stumbled (canoed) home at around 6am.
